I think that was part of a series of jokes about how Ford renamed the Five Hundred and Montego back to Taurus and Sable.

Actually that was based off the Brazilian Chevrolet Vectra, which in turn was based on the Astra. So it did happen, we got the Verano, just one generation later.

I was never a fan of the Taurus, might be cause I was there when they were everywhere in the 80s
